Standards helping landscapers improve quality and reputation

Reputations are precious, taking years to build but potentially destroyed in an instant.

For Adelaide firm LCS Landscapes, reputation was paramount – the firm specialises in landscape design, construction and maintenance for playgrounds, creating play spaces that entertain while keeping their users safe.

For LCS, quality is a guiding principle – a poorly thought-out design or an equipment failure could hurt a child.

Australian Standards supporting quality

LCS Commercial Manager Tom Atkins said it took more than 20 years to build LCS’ reputation for quality, essential for winning work from government departments and educational authorities.

For LCS, quality means aligning with standards at every step of the process, from design through to construction.

“Australian Standards help us deliver a quality project because we can check off every element against the relevant standard across a huge range of use cases,” he says.

“It starts at ground level and it goes right the way up through to the finished product, from our designers using them every day to make sure that everything is design-compliant, through to making sure that each piece of equipment that comes in from overseas meets Australian Standards, and is going in the ground correctly.”

LCS believes adherence with Australian Standards is a benchmark for quality because of what the standards represent – the combined wisdom and experience of established experts in a given field, coming together to agree on the best way to do things.

LCS Landscapes Senior Landscape Architect Rebekah Zammit said a chief benefit to easier access to the standards for all staff was better understanding of standards and clearer communication.

“We use a lot of the digital features to help us collaborate internally,” she said. “It's a shared knowledge base and with that knowledge base comes a better outcome. It helps us streamline the process and move through to solutions extremely quickly.”
