Chair Report

Tracey Gramlick
Chair, Standards Australia Limited

On 14 October, we celebrated World Standards Day, recognising the incredible benefits of standards and their role in enhancing our daily lives and our world. Thank you to everyone who got involved to help build awareness and a greater understanding and appreciation for the valuable work everyone in the standards community does every day.

At Standards Australia, we are committed to supporting areas of growth such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs) and 3D printing.

Recently we announced a partnership with the National AI Centre to bring three new AI events aimed at guiding businesses in implementing responsible and safe AI systems. Further details can be seen in the newsletter below.

We are also working with the NSW Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (NSW DCCEEW), in collaboration with Transport for NSW, to release new specifications for EV chargers: ‘Electric vehicle (EV) charger specifications: residential use and commercial applications.’ These specifications, available at no fee through Standards Australia, provide all the information needed to safely install and use EV chargers at home or in commercial settings. This is an important step in supporting the transition to EVs for Australia.

As previously communicated, Standards Australia CEO Emma Harrington left the business in September to pursue other opportunities. The board is focused on recruiting a new CEO to guide and grow our organisation in the coming years.

In the meantime, the board and executive leadership team remain united in our shared vision and commitment to supporting our members, contributors and the wider community and we continue to make solid progress in the delivery of our strategic goals.

I recently attended the Contributor Forum in Brisbane, and as always it was heartening to see many Members and Contributors in person, actively sharing work, updates, and news from Standards Australia, and hearing invaluable feedback from our esteemed industry associations and colleagues. I am always inspired by the passion and dedication of so many people to the development of standards for the benefit of the community and our nation.

Dr. Ian Oppermann, incoming Vice President and Market Strategy Board Chair at IEC and a member of Standards Australia’s Board presented certificates to Leslie Brand, Lee Thomas Collins, Peter Lee, and Hilary Marazzato who have been recognised with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 1906 Award in the 2024 edition. This award honours exceptional individual achievements that significantly advance IEC activities. Congratulations for their outstanding contributions. I also congratulate the Winners of the 2024 Measurement Awards for 2024.

I look forward to the Annual General Meeting at the end of November and will continue to keep you updated on our progress and news in the months ahead.

New no fee guides available for safe and efficient EV charger installation

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer lower running costs, quieter operation, and reduced emissions. To address charging concerns, NSW Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (NSW DCCEEW), in collaboration with Transport for NSW and funded by the Environmental Trust, has released new specifications for EV chargers, available through Standards Australia.

These no fee guides aim to help with safe installation and use of EV chargers at home or in commercial settings. The new guidelines support a user-friendly charging network, aiding EV adoption and contributing to Australia’s net zero goals.
