ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use

The new International Standard on occupational health and safety (OHS) has today been published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use provides a framework for workplace safety, allowing organisations to manage this key risk as part of their business processes.  

Standards Australia’s technical committee, SF-001, Occupational Health & Safety Management, a member of the ISO committee, voted to support the publication of the standard. The vote represents Australia’s ongoing commitment to the global development and support of occupational health and safety management.

The Australian committee is considering the compatibility of the standard within the Australian regulatory framework. Standards Australia will consult widely before undertaking any process to adopt ISO 45001 as an Australian Standard.

Standards Australia is committed to working with the committee and stakeholders to determine the most suitable way of utilising this new International Standard in Australia through promotion or adoption.

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements with guidance for use is the new international standard providing guidance to organisations and individuals responsible for safe work systems. The new standard outlines processes to help improve work safety, where required, across global supply chains. It provides a framework that can be used to reduce work-related accidents and illnesses in areas of the world without existing OHS management frameworks.

What will ISO 45001 mean for Australian businesses?

Australia already has a robust and long-standing workplace health and safety legislative framework, and voluntary document, AS/NZS 4801:2001, Occupational health and safety management systems - Specification with guidance for use. This joint Australian and New Zealand Standard remains current in this area. Complying with an International Standard in this area is a decision to be made by the individual business manager after considering their position and business, at the same time as their legislative requirements.

What does it mean for those already certified to the current Australian Standard?

Standards Australia is not a government agency or a regulator and we are not involved in the certification or testing process in order to determine compliance with an Australian Standard. The applicability of certification is an issue for the certifiers and regulators in the sector – of which Standards Australia is committed to working with as part of continuing stakeholder engagement in this space.

The Australian committee recognise that further discussion is required in relation to the compatibility of this International Standard within the Australian regulatory framework. Standards Australia is committed to working with all stakeholders to determine the most suitable way of utilising this new international standard in Australia.
