AS ISO/IEC 42001:2023 outlines internal governance and risk management, with the aim of supporting AI development, building business confidence internally and externally, and providing a route for regulatory compliance. Balancing innovation with governance.

The development of the standard involved experts from over 50 countries. It can be used by any size or type of organisation that intends to make use of AI for developing or delivering its products and services.

It is anticipated that AS ISO/IEC 42001:2023 will be the key standard for AI governance in Australia and internationally.

Key outputs for organisations include:

  • A framework for managing risks and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated responsible use of AI.
  • Traceability, transparency, and reliability.
  • Efficiency gains.
  • Confidence in the internal management of AI systems.

In summary, AS ISO/IEC 42001:2023 provides organisations with a roadmap for responsible and effective AI system development and management. By adhering to this standard, companies can enhance their AI applications, reduce development costs, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Kareen Riley-Takos, Chief Operations Officer at Standards Australia said, “AI is growing exponentially in our everyday and professional lives. This transformative technology is changing the way we live and work, as such, we must ensure there are guardrails and standards that support its use. Trust in AI is crucial for its successful implementation and positive impact. Our publication of the first international AI management system standard is the first step in supporting organisations to utilise AI effectively and responsibly”.
