Standards Australia marks World Consumer Rights Day

World Consumer Rights Day falls on March 15th. This global event works to raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs and is an opportunity to demand respect and protection for all consumers rights, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices.
World Consumer Rights Day, officially celebrated since 1983, traces its origins to a 1962 speech by John F. Kennedy where he introduced the concept of four fundamental consumer rights: The Right to Safety, The Right to Be Informed, The Right to Choose, and The Right to Be Heard.
The day is globally recognised and supported by the United Nations and other international entities.
This year, Standards Australia is using its platforms to highlight how we, along with our volunteers and Members, can support consumers and connect with the public – the users of the products and services our standards are written for.
To recognise the day, we hosted a panel discussion featuring three of Standards Australia’s leading experts in consumer-impacting standards:
- Kareen Riley-Takos, Chief Operating Officer, shared insights on how Standards Australia engages with consumers.
- Clare McGrath, Senior Manager of International Engagement, discussed how ISO addresses consumer issues.
- Teresa Corbin, Chair of Australia’s Consumer Policy Committee, spoke about consumer advocacy.
